STIRLING CLOSE, STREATHAM

Our scheme at the former Rowans Surgery in Streatham SW16, proposes the redevelopment of a brownfield site, currently occupied by a redundant heath-care building, for residential purposes.

Through a process of collaboration between the project team and local authority, the site layout has been optimised to provide 9 high-quality family homes, which are split into 3 ‘short-terraces’ echoing the character of suburban residential development in the area. The blocks are positioned to follow the curvature of the northern site boundary, enabling each unit to have a dedicated car parking space with an EV charging point, a south-facing garden and secure cycle parking. Tapered pathways provide a 2.4m separation between the blocks, enabling them to be read as distinct from one another in the street-scene, whilst providing direct access to the gardens for the flank units of each block.

The facades of the ‘short-terraced’ blocks are articulated by the verticality of the front-facing dormers, creating a sense of rhythm, while the landscaping to the front enhances the street-scene and helps to tie the proposal into its context. Patterned brickwork enriches the easterly and westerly gables and frames large ‘picture-windows’, positioned to bathe the internal circulation spaces with natural light.

The design has been developed to incorporate a robust palette of high-quality materials, lending the scheme a timeless, yet contemporary quality whilst remaining sensitive to the surrounding context. Materials including high-quality brickwork with varying bonds, stone with varying textures and standing-seam zinc cladding will be brought together with crisp, minimal detailing, allowing the bold, yet simple design to be appreciated by residents for years to come.
