HAZELDENE ROAD
HAZELDENE ROAD, CHISWICK
Tucked away on the angle of a leafy residential street in Chiswick, the existing Edwardian house is picturesque and a touch cramped. The small, north-facing garden has a couple of mature trees and plenty of shrubs creating a sense of verdant enclosure. However, the orientation means that the house frequently lacks natural light, particularly during winter. Our proposed extension will address both the lack of light as well as space. At ground floor level, the dark and narrow area flanking the outrigger will be annexed for internal space, providing an area for dining with a bespoke bench doubling as storage: The current kitchen does not allow for any extended dining or entertaining. The proposed side return will sit in line with the corner of the outrigger, which will be supported by a pale brick masonry wall defining a modest, part-width extension into the garden. The extension will feature a 2.4 metre square timber-framed pivoting door edged by a natural stone bench. Above, a lightly bush-hammered fascia replaces a rather flimsy metal balcony. The pale, light and natural finishes will help augment ambient light.
At second floor level, a simple study bedroom will be added over the outrigger, and will be clad in simple standing seam gun-metal zinc.
