ABNEY PARK
ABNEY PARK, NORTH LONDON
This prominent site is currently underused and complex – it fronts a major arterial road and shopping street and is bounded by a railway, a 1930’s housing estate and the remnants of grand Georgian villas. It is also in the setting of two conservation areas. It currently hosts a supermarket and a carpark.
Against the back-drop of a demanding housing supply target, we were instructed to develop proposals for a c3 residential-led scheme providing high quality dwellings, retail and community spaces, set in a generous, publicly accessible landscape.
Although designed at a different scale to the surrounding urban fabric, we grounded our design in a thorough analysis of the surrounding architecture, which ranges from Regency to Rationalism and beyond. The combination of towers and linking blocks would help give a proposals a more human scale, letting natural light in throughout the site.
